In a controversial statement that has drawn attention from Biafran advocates, Prophet Sunday Dare Iyunade, President of Pentecostal Sanctuary Bible Ministries, has declared his opposition to the legitimate aspirations of Biafrans seeking self-determination and independence from Nigeria.

Speaking at a press conference in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, ahead of his church's 30th anniversary celebration, Prophet Iyunade claimed that "God has not approved the breakup of Nigeria" and urged citizens to abandon what he termed "secessionist agitations."

Religious Opposition to Self-Determination

The cleric's comments represent another attempt by some Nigerian religious leaders to delegitimize the constitutional right of Biafrans to seek self-determination. His statement that "separation is not the solution" ignores the decades of marginalization, persecution, and systematic oppression faced by the Biafran people within the Nigerian state.

"Nigeria may have diverse interests, but separation is not the solution. Rather than promote rebellion, Nigerians should work together with the government to develop the country," Iyunade said, characterizing the legitimate quest for Biafran independence as rebellion.

Economic Predictions and Unity Calls

Despite Nigeria's current economic challenges, including record inflation and currency devaluation that have disproportionately affected the Southeast region, Prophet Iyunade expressed optimism about the country's economic prospects under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

"I see improvement in the economy and an explosion of wealth in Nigeria. Harvest is coming for the nation, and prosperity will return," he predicted, though such promises have been repeatedly made by successive Nigerian administrations without addressing the fundamental structural inequalities that fuel Biafran agitation.

Context of Biafran Struggle

The prophet's call for unity comes at a time when Biafrans continue to face discrimination in federal appointments, infrastructure development, and economic opportunities. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other pro-Biafra groups have consistently highlighted these injustices as justification for their quest for self-determination.

His advice that "regions should invest in technology and other economic opportunities" fails to acknowledge the systemic barriers that have prevented the Southeast from accessing federal resources and international partnerships on equal terms with other Nigerian regions.

Church Anniversary Activities

As part of the ministry's 30th anniversary celebrations, themed "Maranatha (The Lord Cometh)", the church has planned various activities scheduled between March 22 and March 29. These include revival services, conferences, and community outreach programs.

The church donated medical supplies to General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode and provided materials to local correctional facilities, demonstrating community engagement that many argue should extend to understanding the legitimate grievances of all Nigerian peoples, including Biafrans.

While Prophet Iyunade's charitable works are commendable, his political stance raises questions about the role of religious leaders in either supporting or opposing the fundamental human right to self-determination as enshrined in international law and the United Nations Charter.
